CSA 8.3-2015 Thermoplastic hose and hose couplings for conducting propane and natural gas.
3 Definitions
The following definitions shall apply in this Standard:
Flexible hose assembly — an assembly of hose and couplings meeting the requirements of CSA 8.1 or CSA 8.3 not limited in length.
Flexible hose connectors — an assembly of hose and couplings meeting the requirements of the CSA 8.1 or CSA 8.3 having a length not exceeding 6 ft (1.8 m).
Hose — a flexible conduit that meets the requirements of CSA 8.1 or CSA 8.3.
Proof pressure — a non-destructive test conducted at twice the maximum rated working pressure.
Propane — a liquefied petroleum gas that is classified as either “commercial propane” or USpecialDuty propane in accordance with the Standard Specification for Liquefied Petroleum (LP) Gases, ASTM D1835 Special-Duty propane is equivalent to Propane HD-5.
4 Hose
4.1 General construction
4.1.1 Design pressure
A hose shall be designed to have a working pressure of at least 350 psig (2.4 MPa) and a minimum burst strength of five times the rated working pressure.
4.1.2 Design tolerances
The internal diameter of the hose shall be equal to the nominal diameter, plus 0.015 in (0.381 mm) or minus 0.008 In (0.203 mm) for sizes up to and including 1/2 in (12.7 mm) and plus 0.030 in (0.762 mm) or minus 0.015 (0.381 mm) for sizes up to and including 1 in (2.54 cm). The tolerances of the outside diameter of the hose shall be the same as those specified for the internal diameter.
4.1.3 Inner tube construction
The inner tube shall be made of seamless thermoplastic. The tube shall have a smooth bore free from defects in workmanship, from fisheyes, die lines, or other imperfections and be free of all foreign matter. The thickness of the tube shall not be less than 0.025 in (0.635 mm).
4.1.4 Tube reinforcement
A reinforcement, when required, shall consist of one or more plies of synthetic fiber and/or stainless steel wire firmly and evenly applied over the tube. There shall be no broken plies.
4.1.5 Outer surface construction
The outer surface of the hose shall be weather resistant and free from fisheyes, defects in workmanship, and other imperfections.
The intentional pricking of the outer surface shall not be considered an imperfection.
4.2 Identification and marking
4.2.1
A hose shall be clearly marked with the following information:
a) identification of the certification agency;
b) manufacturer’s identification;
c) hose ID size;
d) maximum working pressure (psig);
e) manufacturing date or date code; and,
f) hose type “T/P”
4.2.2
A hose shall be clearly identified by a series of continuous markings. The maximum distance between any two markings shall be not more than 18 in (45.72 cm) from the start of one set of identification symbols to the start of the next set of symbols.
4.2.3
The hose shall be marked by a Class I Marking (see Clause 6.3).
